Macy's Thanksgiving Parade

Macy's Thanksgiving Parade started out as Macy's Christmas Parade in 1924. It was so
successful Macy's announced it would become an anual occurance. The first year (1927) that helium balloons were used, they popped on the Manhattan Skyline. The next year the balloons were redesigned and had return adresses on them. If one was lucky enough to find a stray balloon they could bring it to Macy's and receive a reward.

In 1942 the parade stopped for the first time in effect of World War II. This was because of the lack of rubber and helium. The materials from the balloons were scrapped for the war.

The first floats in the parade were built in 1969.

In 1979 the first Emmy (of nine) was given to the broadcasts of the parade.

Happy Thanksgiving!
